One of typical Filipino manner is that eventhough we transported to another places we will always keep who we are and based on Celerina Mirabueno Navarro the Executive Director of Batanes Ivatan Art Gallery she believed to it when she mentioned that similar to that manner, Ivatans remain as Ivatans everywhere they go.
Before Mrs. Navarro became the director of BIAG she is a former teacher of English and Literature in highschool and college. From Bachelor in Science and Education and graduate in Studies and Linguistic she took up Social Work major in Social Administration in University of the Philippines. She felt that majoring in that, you study how to manage and to make policies which have very incompassing effect or impact on institution or in organization. She is also involved in some charity houses and one with the advocacy about empowering the poor and helping people help themselves.
The farther we go away from the culture we grow, the more confused and the more we get into trouble because we can't define ourselves anymore. So the preservation of art and culture we have, provides a sense of identity. Art is a way of spreading awareness around about who we really are and why are we like this. It records all events and experiences that allow us to have a richer understanding of ourselves and our history.
Having a continuous fast changing world there is still the desire to conserve our history by handing it down to the new generation while blending it with modern practices to keep up with the times.
Keeping the values of your parents and grandparents you will not be afraid to be different from the others because of your values and practices are acceptable especially to your family. She hopes that our children will learn from us and keep the way of life. We have to be clear about who we are and where do we come from. So when we look back, we never forget our upbringing, take and be proud of our culture wherever you are.
